The French CountrysideWestward from the Italian town of Ventimiglia, with its fortified walled enclosed clusters of tall houses perched above the Mediteranean Sea, you enter Provence France. Throughout the mountain villages and towns in this part of the French countryside, are narrow streets and weather-beaten tiled rooftops. The red and Yellow ochre sandstone quarries near Roussillon and Gordes provide brillient images of sun-baked houses, one on top of the other on the steep slopes of the hilly countryside. Each village and town has its own walled citadel built centuries ago usually at the highest point of its city limits. It is this theme that Darvie has presented in his paintings.2 >>© 2010 www.normdarvie.com |
